  • Reading Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for reading assessment in primary education are designed to measure a child's reading skills and comprehension. These indicators are used by teachers to assess whether a child is working at the expected standard by the end of the academic year. The KPIs include:

    • Understanding and predicting: Children should be able to predict what might happen from details stated and implied.

    • Reading accuracy: They should read accurately by blending sounds in unfamiliar words and read many common exception words.

    • Responding to texts: Children should respond speedily with the correct sound to graphemes and read aloud accurately books consistent with their developing phonic knowledge.

    • Explaining and discussing: They should explain and discuss their understanding of books, poems, and other material.

    • Experimenting with reading choices: Children should be willing to experiment with reading choices and identify themes and conventions in a wide range of texts.

    • These KPIs are used alongside other teacher assessments to build a picture of whether an individual is working at the expected standard by the end of the academic year.
